It is possible to do fat grafting along with breast augmentation with implants if so desired. It is also possible that if your breasts are starting to drop or sag, that you will need a breast lift as a first stage procedure. It is not advisable to perform fat grafting at the same time as the lifting procedure, as the fat can disrupt the blood supply if there has been a lot of dissection. Therefore, it’s best to do the lift first, and then fat can be used to augment and improve shape, including enhancing the upper pole, a common concern for many women.
RECOVERY
The typical recovery from this is one week, primarily to allow some of the swelling and bruising to subside, and for the soreness from the liposuction areas to dissipate. Dr. Linville’s staff will make sure you have the proper postoperative garments you need, and he will see you immediately after your surgery and several more times to make sure you are recovering properly. As soon as he approves that you are ready, you may return to full activity. Since there are no implants to disrupt, there are not a whole lot of concerns.
IS FAT TRANSFER SAFE?
Fat transfer to the breast has been proven to be safe, and is used routinely for women who have had their breasts removed due to breast cancer, with no evidence to show a link to new breast cancer development. Liposuction, especially by a double-board certified plastic surgeon, is very safe, because you can be confident that all proper safety measures will be taken, and you will have an excellent result to your liposuction.
Breast screening exams such as mammograms can be altered by fat that has been transferred, and will typically show up as benign findings on mammography, such as oil cysts or benign-appearing calcification. Provided your breast radiologist is familiar with these benign findings, it should not lead to more biopsies or studies.
ADDITIONAL STAGES
Some patients who desire a much larger breast shape but want to do fat-only will require more than one round of fat transfer. This is because, as mentioned, only some of the fat survives, yet only so much fat can be injected at each surgery. Once the breasts have healed to their new volume, if more size is desired, another round, and sometimes even a third round, can be performed.
