What Is Breast Revision?

A breast implant revision aims to correct or replace breast implants from a previous surgery. The reasons for your breast revision can vary. For some, it is as simple as replacing implants that changed shape or size over the years. Likewise, your body can change as well. Whatever the cause, this procedure focuses on helping you achieve the look you want from your breast implants.

This procedure can be combined with a breast lift or reduction, especially if you want additional enhancements. The goal is to make your breasts look better by doing one or some of the following:

  • Reshaping the implant pockets
  • Repositioning the implants in your chest
  • Changing the size shape of the implant

If you are dissatisfied with your current implants, this procedure may be right for you.

Am I a Candidate for a Breast Revision?

There are several reasons you may want to get a revision and may be a candidate for this procedure. Below are some of the common reasons our patients contact us. You could:

  • Have issues with your current implants, including a leak or rupture.
  • Have problems with the area around your implant, including hardening or thickening, which can cause pain and distort the implant.
  • Experience bottoming out, lateralization, or medialization of the implants.
  • See movement can occur when lying flat or with an activity if the pocket is overly large. This means the implant has too much room to move around.
  • See the implant become displaced when the muscle contracts (in cases when the implant is placed under the muscle).
  • Feel that your implants are too boxy, square, or even too lateral.
Feel the implants you already have are too big or small.
  • See visible rippling of the implants (most common in thinner individuals).

If any of the above apply to you, a breast lift might be the right procedure for you. Contact the office of Linville Plastic Surgery today for a consultation to see if you can be a good candidate! We are happy to answer your questions and provide you with the information you need to decide on your breast revision.

Procedure Overview

Before the procedure, you will need to attend your preoperative visit. This meeting will help prepare you on:

  • How to get ready for surgery
  • What will happen during surgery
  • How to prepare for your recovery in advance

Depending on your unique and personalized plan, the procedure itself can take up to a few hours. However, Dr. Linville is with you every step of the way. He is very focused on your aesthetic outcomes but also wants you to feel comfortable from start to finish.

A revision can be complex, even more so than your original breast augmentation. Breast revision often requires multiple techniques and in-depth knowledge of the body to achieve your desired results. Each one is different from one patient to the next and requires a thorough workup, evaluation, and extensive planning. After developing your plan, Dr. Linville and his team will prepare you for surgery.

Breast implant revision is typically performed with general anesthesia. However, lighter sedation is possible to avoid additional strain on your body. Depending on your unique case, your surgery typically lasts between 1-2 hours, though some are shorter or longer.

Breast Revision Recovery

Because this is an outpatient procedure, you will likely go home the same day. Special medications will be used to help enhance your recovery after surgery. Dr. Linville will also provide you a complete set of instructions to optimize your recovery time. You’ll need to attend all of your follow-up appointments with Dr. Linville as this will help ensure you are healing correctly.

Each breast revision surgery is different for each person, which means recovery will also be different. Generally though, for the first two weeks you will want to focus on resting. Get help if you can with any daily tasks that need to be done around your home. It also helps not to exercise or lift anything for at least two weeks after surgery. After two weeks, and with the doctor’s approval, you can get back into some light exercise and moderate lifting.

As long as everything is healing as expected, you should be completely back to normal within six weeks. At that point, you can begin more intense exercise and get back to your full daily routine.

If the path be beautiful, let us not ask where it leads.

Results

The results of your procedure will not be apparent immediately, as you will have some bruising and swelling for the first few weeks to months. Your chest should fully settle within six weeks when the bruising and swelling go down. In some cases, it can take six months to heal and see the full and final results. However, following the doctor’s instructions, attending your follow-up appointments, and focusing on healing can help.
