Breast Implants and Scarring: What Patients Can Expect After Surgery
Are you interested in breast augmentation surgery but concerned about scars? It’s a common concern we hear at our plastic surgery center in Houston, TX. As part of the consultation process, we’ll ensure you get all the info you need to make the right decision for you. We want you to feel confident about your choice to get breast implants or your choice to not get surgery.
The two major surgical factors that will have a major bearing on scars are the type of implant used and the location of the surgical incisions. Let’s explore both of these factors and other issues related to breast augmentation and scarring below.
Breast Implant Incision Methods
Our Houston plastic surgery center uses these three incision methods to place and position implants. We can review the right surgical technique for your needs during the consultation process.
Inframammary Incision
An inframammary incision is one that is made along the crease on the underside of the patient’s breast. The implant is placed and positioned through this incision under the breast.
Since the incision is on the underside of the breast, it stays relatively well hidden by many tops, bathing suits, and bras.
Periareolar Incision
A periareolar incision is one that is made around the areola, the circular patch of skin surrounding the nipple. The implant is placed and positioned through this incision, which is typically made around the lower half of the areola.
There is a good chance that scars will be concealed by this incision method since the skin of the areola differs in color from the skin of the breast.
Axillary Incision
An axillary incision is one that is made in the armpit. Though that incision is under the arm, the implant can be inserted and positioned.
Since the incision is located in the armpit, it’s extremely well hidden. Many people will not notice the scar unless they know where to look and what to look for.
How the Implant Used Affects Incision Size and Location
Saline implants generally mean smaller incisions. This is because they can be inserted while deflated and then filled once they are in place. This means smaller incisions under the breast, the armpit, or around the areola.
Silicone, gummy bear, and teardrop breast implants can only be placed using incisions around the breasts themselves. This is just the reality given the composition of these kinds of implants. That said, all attempts are made to reduce the amount of scarring.
Screening Patients Who Have a History of Excessive Scarring
Some patients may be more susceptible to scarring than others. If you have a past medical history of keloid scarring, severe scarring, or discolored scars, we can assess your risk of serious scarring from a breast augmentation procedure.
Taking this precaution can prevent patients from being displeased with the final outcome of their surgery. It’s just one of many things we can do to ensure you feel good about your surgical options before we even book a date for your surgery.
